Southern Maryland is composed of Maryland’s southernmost counties on the western shore. These counties are Saint Mary’s County, Calvert County, Charles County, and the southern portions of Anne Arundel County and Prince George’s County.

Southern Maryland in 1634 was the site of the first Roman Catholic English settlement in North America. It has traditionally been a rural and agricultural region. Over the past few decades the region has experienced some suburban development as the Washington D.C. suburbs have expanded southward. This has primarily taken place in Prince George’s County and around Waldorf (Charles County), Lexington Park (Saint Mary’s County), and Prince Frederick (Calvert County). Many Southern Marylanders work at Andrews Air Force Base or at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. There are Amish and Mennonite communities in Saint Mary’s County. Fishing, boating, sailing, and eating Maryland blue crabs are very popular.
